The "Hidden-Beauty" Small Towns & Villages in Japan - "Izumizaki Village" in Fukushima Prefecture

The "Izumizaki Village" has been maintaining their unique status as a residential village in Fukushima prefecture, in spite of the fact that the population of the majority of villages in Japan has been shrunk for the past 50 years.


Although the population of the village has been gradually growing, the village has been capable to maintain the natural resources and the scenic beauties and values within the village.   


The transfer of the traditional and environmental values has been made smoothly from old to new generation.




1. The Basic Information on "Izumizaki Village" :


- The Total Area:  35.43 km2

- The Population: 6,444 persons (as of 2016)

- The Density of Population:  182 persons / km2

- The Railway:  There is one JR train station (Izumizaki) on JR Tohoku Main Line within the village.

- The Main Roads:  One National Road, #4, is available in the village.

- The Bus:  There used to have the public bus service under Fukushima Transport in the past, but only a community bus service run by the village is


- The Airport:  The nearest domestic airport is Fukushima airport, away from the village in 18km (30min drive).

Note:  The population of the town has been growing by 20% roughly, compared to the one in the year of 1970 (46 years ago).  The main reason for the growth is that the town has been developed as a supportive residential area for the neighboured cities such as Shirakawa city or Sukagawa city.
