New Discovery in Japan - SHIGA Prefecture in KINKI / KANSAI Region

July 1, 2015

Today, I would like to talk about Mt. Hiei and Enryakuji Temple, which is so important, not only to Shiga prefecture but also to Japan in a long history.

Mt. Hiei (848m high), which is just located closer to both borders between Shiga and Kyoto prefectures, is not so high as other famous mountains in Japan.  However, the mountain is well known to people in a long Buddhism history, since the mountain has been considered as both very important location for Japanese Buddhism, especially in the "Tendai-Shu" Buddhist sector.

There is a very famous "Enryakuji" Temple in the Mt. Hiei, which was built by Saicho, the Master of "Tendai-Shu" sector in the year of 788.   Enryakuji Temple was officially designated as a part of UNESCO World Heritage Site for Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto in 1994.  In addition, Enryakuji Temple also has total 10 National Treasures as well as more than 50 most important historic treasures approved by Japanese government.

With more than 1,200-year long history, Enryakuji Temple has taken very important roles to lead Japanese Buddhism all the time.  In the long history, Enryakuji Temple has actually sent out many famous masters who had created and advocated various new Japanese Buddhism sectors in Japan.

Please note that Enryakuji Temple is open for the public to provide people with a short-time buddhism / Zen training reguarly.  Therefore, you may consider to check with the temple, if you are interested in.
