Have you ever gone to Hokkaido to see a very grand event of "SAPPORO SNOW FESTIVAL" so far? If you have not yet, I like to suggest that you try to be there. If you have been there, please introduce to your friends in your countries.
"SAPPORO SNOW FESTIVAL" started in a very small scale by some Secondly & Junior College schools in 1950. Thereafter, the participation of the fesival has been expanded gradually and it has become very popular. Today, it is expected to have more than 2 million visitors every year not only from all over Japan but also from many other countries.
"SAPPORO SNOW FESTIVAL" is normally held on the 1st week of Feb every year. The main events at festival are hundreds of snow and ice sculptures. In addition, there are many other activities such as snowboarding and beauty contest. The festival is held on three locations, i.e., Odori Park and Susukino which are quite close each other in the central Sapporo, while the last one is Tsudome slightly away.
The festival’s main venue, Odori Park, along the large-space streets at the centre of the Sapporo city. All the giantic snow sculptures are built by bulldozers and mechanical heavy-eqippment machines much earlier than the start date of festival . The snow is transported from various locations in Sapporo as well as from the nearby highlands.
Thus, you can't imagine how serously preparation work is planned, implemented and executed in a large scale by the festival committee as well as Sapporo city governemnt office every year. Please note that the festival schedule & information of this year is as below.
